Spray the paint on the bumper in light, even coats. If you sand through the primer, reapply the primer and sand again, repeating the former steps. Sand the primer without reaching the chrome surface. Sand the primer lightly with 800-grit sandpaper, keeping the paper wet while sanding. Spray two thin coats, allowing each to dry completely before moving on. Spray regular automotive primer to the bumper, directly on top of the self-etching primer. Previously available in a limited preview, anyone can now access the redesigned store to easily find Chrome extensions and themes. This type of primer grabs onto the metal, allowing later coats of primer and paint to stick to the chrome. Wipe with wax and grease remover and then spray the entire bumper with self-etching primer. Sand the entire chrome bumper until there are no shiny spots to be seen. If the chrome is smooth and in good shape, use 80-grit sandpaper. Use 36-grit sandpaper and a dual-action sander on the entire bumper if the chrome is peeling, flaking, or has large cracks. You might even be able to work a deal with the shop if they have something else in that's getting black so they don't have to do set up and stuff twice. If it were me, I'd probably get an eBay grill and rear bumper both in black and take my front bumper to a paint shop to have it done professionally. Black is one of those colors that has a tendency to show you the spots you went heavy on after it's been applied, dried and been around a bit. Plus it's very difficult to coat something as big as a bumper evenly with rattle cans. It takes a lot of coats of spray paint and clear to equal a good coat or 2 of each in an automotive grade paint. I'm not averse to spray paint, I just feel it doesn't hold up well over time especially on the front end of a vehicle. ![]() I plasti-dipped the grill and door spears on my 06 as well and it looked great for a good while but eventually started to do that faded chalky looking thing. The trouble I have with spray on products like bedliners and plasti-dip is they tend to fade over the years. They look good, fit well and don't have to be painted if you're just going black. I have a few friends that have eBay grills and like them just fine. I wanted to get a grill but never pulled the trigger myself. It was good quality and the paint was fine years later. I replaced the chrome rear on my old 06 with a black one off eBay a number of years ago. Looking like less than $300 for black rear and grills are were less than $200 last time I really looked. If you're just wanting black and not color matched, there are a number of inexpensive bumpers and grills on eBay (probably Amazon too) that can be had in black or chrome for not a lot of money. ![]()
